Chan Chan

Chan Chan site between the mountains and the Pacific Ocean. Middle of the desert but apparently the Chimu harnessed the fresh mountain water for agriculture.

Mud brick palaces and tombs of the Chimu. They predate the Inca. I rode through the site on the Pan American Highay and it looked like sand dunes and rubble. Returning a day later on a guided tour the true value of the excavated part of the site was revealed. The size of the site is huge taking up several hundred hectares.
